A Year of Insight: My Practicum at Centennial Counseling Center
Compartir
The past academic year has been a transformative period in my professional and academic journey. As part of the Psy.D. program at Wheaton College, I had the incredible opportunity to complete my practicum at Centennial Counseling Center. This experience was enriched by the mentorship and supervision of Dr. Tim Buhrt, whose guidance has been essential in shaping my skills and understanding of psychological assessment. I am excited to share the valuable lessons and experiences I gained during this time.
My Role at Centennial Counseling Center
During my training as a Diagnostician Extern, I had the opportunity to conduct a comprehensive evaluation and diagnostic process. From the clinical interview, through the selection and administration of psychometric and psychological tests, to the interpretation of results and the preparation of an integrative report, each step was important. Additionally, I provided services in both English and Spanish to individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds. My approach focuses on equipping clients with tools and resources, emphasizing that their identity transcends any diagnosis.
A Place of Learning and Growth
Centennial Counseling Center provided an environment conducive not only to learning but also to personal growth. One of the most significant aspects of my practicum was the opportunity to work under the supervision of a highly competent psychologist, who was sensitive to cultural and Christian values. I recall an instance when Dr. Buhrt said, "What? Did you make a mistake?" in a surprised tone, with a hint of sarcasm and a warm smile, normalizing the space to make mistakes and freeing me from unsustainable idealism. Dr. Buhrt's experience and approach to supervision were truly inspiring. He created a space where questions were welcomed, and learning was a collaborative process. This type of mentorship is invaluable.
The Power of Vulnerability
A standout aspect of my experience was the emphasis on vulnerability within a safe and trusting environment. Being vulnerable in professional settings can often be intimidating, but I have learned that showing vulnerability in a safe space is key to authentic growth and development. At Centennial Counseling Center, I discovered that being open and transparent with my supervisors and colleagues allowed me to forge meaningful relationships and develop professional competencies to high standards. This transparency fostered trust and facilitated a deeper learning experience. It reminded me that vulnerability is not a weakness but a strength that can lead to significant professional and personal relationships.
The Warmth of the Staff
Another highlight of my experience was the welcoming and supportive attitude of the entire staff at Centennial Counseling Center. From the reception team to the clinical staff, everyone displayed kindness, humility, and a willingness to help. This attitude made a substantial difference in my experience. It was not just about professional development but also about being part of a community that truly cares about the growth and well-being of others. With locations in St. Charles, Yorkville, and Sandwich, Illinois, Centennial Counseling Center offers a wide range of services, including individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and psychological assessments.
Conclusion
My time at Centennial Counseling Center has been an enriching part of my professional journey. The combination of expert supervision, a warm and supportive environment, and hands-on experience has prepared me well for the next steps in my career. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in such a professional environment. As I continue my journey, I carry with me the lessons of vulnerability, cultural competence, and the importance of a supportive professional community.
