My Experience at Centennial
My Experience at Centennial Counseling Center
This past academic year has been a truly transformative chapter in my professional and academic journey. As part of the Psy.D. program at Wheaton College, I had the opportunity to complete my practicum at Centennial Counseling Center. This experience was deeply enriched by the mentorship and supervision of Dr. Tim Buhrt, whose guidance was essential in shaping my skills and understanding of psychological assessment and practice in general.
A Place for Learning and Growth
Centennial Counseling Center provided an environment that was not only conducive to learning but also supportive of personal growth. One of the most meaningful aspects of my practicum was the opportunity to work under the supervision of a highly competent psychologist with cultural sensitivity and Christian values.
I clearly remember one occasion when Dr. Buhrt said to me, “What? Did you make a mistake?” with a slight touch of sarcasm and a warm smile. That moment normalized the possibility of making mistakes. Dr. Buhrt’s experience and supervision style were truly inspiring. He created a space where questions were welcomed and learning was a collaborative process. This kind of mentorship is invaluable.
The Power of Vulnerability
One of the most significant aspects of my experience was the emphasis on vulnerability within a safe and trusting environment. For many, being vulnerable in professional settings can feel intimidating. However, I have learned that showing vulnerability in a secure space is key to authentic growth and development.
At Centennial Counseling Center, I discovered that being open and transparent with my supervisors and colleagues allowed me to build meaningful relationships and develop professional competencies. This transparency strengthened trust and facilitated a deeper learning experience. It reminded me that vulnerability is not a weakness with the correct people but a strength that can lead to meaningful relationships.
The Warmth of the Staff
Another highlight of my experience was the welcoming and supportive attitude of the entire staff at Centennial Counseling Center. From the reception team to the clinical staff, everyone showed kindness.
With locations in St. Charles, Yorkville, and Sandwich, Illinois, Centennial Counseling Center offers a wide range of services, including individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, and psychological evaluations (https://centennialcounseling.com/).
Gratitude and Next Steps
My time at Centennial Counseling Center has been a fundamental part of my professional journey. The combination of supervision and a supportive environment provided me with a deeply enriching practical experience, preparing me for the next steps in my path. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow.
As I continue my journey, I carry with me lessons on vulnerability, cultural competence, and the importance of a professional community.
